Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Drug Supply and Utilization

Drug shortages are not new to Canadians and anyone working in Pharmacy. The reasons for shortages are many and varied. COVID-19 has magnified some weaknesses in the supply chain but has also resulted in increased demand from consumers as stockpiling of medications was recommended by public health officials initially.

Demand was also increased for critical care drugs due to increased admissions to hospitals for patients with active COVID-19 infections. Mina Tadrous aims to discuss the reasons why drug shortages may occur, how COVID has made this worse, and what can be done on a local and national level to mitigate this growing global problem.
