Dr. Dyke was an educator. First a primary school teacher, then Professor of Education, and finally Professor of Christian Education at Emmanuel College, she was good at inspiring learning. She was also a passionate believer in the power of the arts to connect people to their faith and to a deeper understanding of the relationship between human beings and God.
A feminist and trail blazer - the first woman appointed full-professor at a protestant seminary in Canada - Dr. Dyke did not shy away from conflict. The sculpture Crucified Woman was initially controversial, but its installation in the courtyard behind Emmanuel College is ongoing testament to her efforts and her belief in art as opening new ways to see the world.
The Dr. Doris Jean Dyke Scholarship will provide support to students interested in advancing knowledge about the arts as an expression of faith.
